How to choose a gym or studio
Try it before you sign
Ask for a trial class, guest pass or intro week, and visit at the time of day you actually plan to go. That shows you how crowded it gets and whether the classes suit you.
Read the cancellation terms
Before you sign, ask how to cancel, how much notice is required, and whether there is an enrollment fee, annual fee or early termination fee. Get the terms in writing and keep a copy.
Check instructor credentials
Ask whether trainers hold a current certification from a nationally accredited organization and are trained in CPR and first aid. For martial arts and dance, ask about the instructor's own training and how long they have been teaching.
Look at safety and cleanliness
Check that equipment is in good repair, floors and mats are clean, and staff are around to help. For kids' programs, ask about background checks, class sizes and how children are supervised at pickup.
Watch for high-pressure sales
A good gym or studio will let you take the contract home and think it over. Be wary of offers that require you to sign today, long contracts with no way out, or promises of fast results.
What it typically costs
These are typical US ranges, and local prices vary with the area, the facility and any promotions, so confirm current rates before you join.
Budget gyms cost the least, while full-service clubs with pools, classes and childcare charge much more.
Rates depend on the trainer's experience and location, and buying a package often lowers the price per session.
Reformer pilates and other equipment-based classes usually cost more than mat classes, and class packs lower the price.
The price depends on classes per week, and uniforms, belt testing or recital costumes are often extra.
Common questions
How much does a gym membership cost in your area?
Most gym memberships run about $10 to $150 a month, depending on the type of gym. Budget gyms sit at the low end, while clubs with pools, classes and childcare cost more. Ask gyms in your area about enrollment and annual fees, which are often extra.
How do I cancel a gym membership?
Start by reading your contract, which spells out how to cancel, how much notice you must give and whether a fee applies. Some gyms require a written request in person or by mail, and the rules on how gyms must let you cancel vary by state. Keep a copy of your request and any confirmation you receive.
What should I look for in a personal trainer?
Look for a current certification from a nationally accredited organization, CPR and first aid training, and experience with goals like yours. A good trainer asks about your goals and any health concerns before the first workout. They should adjust your plan as you progress rather than repeat the same routine every time.
What age can kids start martial arts or dance?
Many schools start classes around age 3 to 5, usually with short, play-based sessions for young children. The right age depends on the child's attention span and the program. Ask to watch a class at a school in your area to see whether it feels like a good fit.
Do gyms and studios offer a trial class or day pass?
Yes, many gyms and studios offer a free or low-cost trial class, day pass or intro offer for new members. It is the easiest way to check the atmosphere, the instructors and how busy it gets. Ask what the trial includes and whether you will be asked to sign anything.
What is the difference between yoga and pilates?
Yoga blends movement, stretching and breathing, with styles that range from gentle to very athletic. Pilates focuses on core strength, posture and controlled movement, either on a mat or on a machine called a reformer. Many studios offer beginner classes in both, so trying one of each is a simple way to decide.
